West Bridgfordians launch ladies cricket
Sunday 15th June 2014 will go down in the club’s history as the day that West Bridgfordian’s Ladies played their first ever full ladies cricket match.
The venue for this occasion was Gedling and Sherwood Cricket Club, on Regatta Way, Gamston playing in what was to be a great and memorable occasion for the club.
Having lost the toss, West Bridgfordians (WBCC) Ladies were asked to field and as they made their way to the wicket the clouds loomed large. However, this was not going to be a cloudy day for our new ladies team as they took to the field. Having taken 2 quick wickets, Gedling and Sherwood looked in big trouble until their captain, Trush Mistry, managed to carry her bat until very close to the allotted 20 overs, scoring a brilliant 46 runs. Most notably for our new ladies, 6 of our ladies managed to take a wicket apiece, leaving Gedling and Sherwood struggling to a final score of 82 off their allotted 20 overs. A decent target, but would it be enough?
After a brief interval of ‘posed’ team photograph’s and a quick refreshment break, our young ladies padded up and prepared to bat. Following a shaky start where WBCC ladies lost 2 quick wickets, Grace Thompson came to the wicket to support the hard hitting Lola Smith and they proceeded to ‘steady the ship’ putting on a safe 16 runs until Grace was unfortunately dismissed. However, all was well as Lola started to hit the ball, going on to smash a fantastic 36 runs ably supported by Alina Tebbutt who contributed a very quick fire 29 of just 20 balls which took the game away from Gedling and Sherwood. The new WBCC Ladies team completed their memorable victory with Alina smashing the ball back over the bowlers head for 4 to finish the match with 7 overs to spare. Played one, won one – brilliant, bring on Notts and Arnold.
